Ushio Inc. (hereinafter referred to as "Ushio") has completed the development of the HL63723DG laser diode (LD), which is suitable for automotive and sensor applications requiring high-temperature operation. The product will be available for sale in July 2025.
Compared to conventional products with a 60°C operating range, this product boasts a high light output power of 200mW at a short red light wavelength of 642nm, while extending its maximum operating temperature range to 85°C. It can also operate stably at low temperatures down to -40°C, making it suitable for a wide range of applications, including automotive and sensor applications requiring operation over a wide temperature range.
In recent years, advancements in automotive electrification and autonomous driving technologies have driven the development of new technologies aimed at enhancing in-vehicle and external information displays and safety. Technologies such as in-vehicle projection using RGB LDs, external ground projection, and head-up displays (HUDs) have garnered significant attention due to their ability to provide intuitive driving information. These applications require LDs capable of operating within a temperature range from 85°C to -40°C.
In sensor applications, LDs are widely used as non-contact sensors for detecting the presence of objects and for 2D and 3D object recognition. To simplify cooling structures and achieve device miniaturization, LDs capable of stable operation at high temperatures are required.
In the aforementioned applications, ensuring the characteristics and reliability of the LD during high-temperature operation is crucial. Generally, compared to infrared and blue LDs, red LDs, due to their material properties, cannot confine carriers within the active layer at high temperatures, resulting in a significant decrease in power conversion efficiency. To address this challenge for red LDs, Ushio optimized the active layer design and developed crystal growth technology to enhance carrier confinement within the active layer, thereby significantly improving characteristics and reliability during high-temperature operation. Therefore, while traditional products have a high-temperature operating limit of 60°C within the 640nm wavelength range, the new product extends this range to 85°C, achieving 50mW of optical output at 85°C.
Ushio will continue to innovate and provide higher-performance products to meet customer needs and contribute to society through lighting technology.
