In January of this year, Hyundai Mobis unveiled a holographic display system that "does not require a display device" at CES, the world's largest consumer electronics show, once again showcasing innovative in-vehicle display technology to the public.

Unlike traditional in-vehicle displays, Hyundai Mobis' system has no display device. Instead, it uses "holographic windshield display" technology to transform the windshield into a transparent display screen. This system was directly integrated into Kia's EV9 electric vehicle at the exhibition, creating a unique user experience for attendees.

In recent years, the automotive display market has shifted its focus to user experience innovation, such as providing large screens, high-resolution images, innovative technologies (including 3D and AR), and privacy modes. Even exterior designs have been modified to add a unique atmosphere to the car interior. Global automakers are also actively adopting advanced, multifunctional displays to shape a distinctive brand image.

A key feature of Hyundai Mobis' holographic windshield display technology is its ability to transform the entire windshield into a transparent display screen without the need for additional equipment. This means that drivers and passengers no longer need display devices; driving information, navigation, playlists, and other data are directly displayed at the bottom of the windshield. From the outside, the system looks like an ordinary piece of transparent glass, but it actually boasts high brightness and accurate color reproduction, ensuring that drivers and passengers can clearly see the displayed content even in bright outdoor environments.

Unique Technology: The Entire Windshield as a Screen
This display technology projects images and videos onto any part of the windshield, primarily through a special thin film made of optical elements called HOE (Holographic Optical Element). Unlike ordinary screens, HOE utilizes the principle of light diffraction (i.e., light rays deviate from their original path to reach their destination) to efficiently transmit the projected images and videos to the eye level of the driver and passengers. It can also provide a privacy display mode to prevent the driver from seeing the content on the passenger screen.

Depending on where the film is installed (such as above, below, or to the side of the windshield), the holographic display will have different effects. For example, when the user places the film to the side of the windshield, the display will resemble the curved side screen of a smartphone. It is understood that this holographic display is the only automotive technology that can transform the entire windshield into a display.

Hyundai Mobis CEO Lee Gyu Suk and ZEISS CEO Karl Lamprecht attended the CES exhibition.

Hyundai Mobis and ZEISS Collaborate on Automotive Holographic Display; CEOs Emphasize Close Cooperation
Hyundai Mobis has partnered with the globally renowned German optics company ZEISS to develop the advanced display system showcased at this year's CES. The two companies aim to enhance technological synergy through collaboration, completing preliminary R&D by the first half of next year, with mass production targeted for as early as 2027. Hyundai Mobis CEO Lee Gyu Suk and ZEISS CEO Karl Lamprecht both appeared at Hyundai Mobis' CES booth this year, emphasizing their close partnership; while admiring the holographic windshield technology on display, they also discussed further collaboration plans. The two companies will focus on advanced driver and cabin monitoring system solutions and innovative augmented reality (AR) display technologies to deepen their collaboration.

Hyundai Mobis continues to strengthen its technological advantages in the global high-end automotive display market, including high-end product series such as ultra-thin large-format high-definition QL displays, 34-inch curved Swivel displays, and rollable displays.

Hyundai Mobis CEO Lee Gyu Suk stated, "Hyundai Mobis will target the global market with industry-leading technology and high-value-added products, and actively launch a variety of new technologies."
