Valeo – Osram – Smart LED for Dynamic Ambient Lighting
ams Osram, a leading global supplier of smart sensors and light emitters, and Valeo, a leader in automotive technology, announced a collaboration to revolutionize automotive interior lighting and revolutionize the industry's cabin lighting concepts, employing innovative Open Systems Protocol (OSP) technology. Combining ams Osram's groundbreaking OSIRE® E3731i smart LED and Valeo's dynamic ambient lighting system, the two companies will set a new standard for vehicle interior design and functionality.
The role of automotive interior lighting is becoming increasingly prominent, and the mainstream trend in cabin design should meet the needs of end users: namely, ease of use, personalization, and the provision of clear information that aligns with their lifestyles. Therefore, dynamic ambient lighting presents numerous new opportunities.
The application of smart LEDs enables a highly controllable system capable of creating animated effects throughout the cockpit or in specific areas. The speed, brightness, and color of each LED can be adjusted to provide alerts or visual feedback. Applications are diverse, including call reminders, visual personal assistants, and input for navigation or ADAS systems.
The Open Systems Protocol (OSP) is an advanced communication framework that enables the management of a range of intelligent RGB (red-green-blue) LEDs (OSP-RGBi) using a microcontroller. These devices differ from ordinary LEDs; each OSP-RGBi contains a smart IC that integrates a driver, temperature sensor, storage unit, and OSP-compatible serial bus interface. This integrated design supports dynamic and animated lighting applications, enhancing the aesthetics and safety of vehicle interiors.
Valeo has developed a complete ambient lighting system encompassing optics, electronics, and software. This system enables highly uniform and color-accurate RGB ambient lighting while ensuring smooth lighting animations within the cockpit. Valeo's expertise in electronics and software is key to achieving high-quality performance.
Hermann Senninger, Senior Product Manager at ams Osram, stated, "Dynamic interior lighting is not just about enhancing the aesthetics of a vehicle; it also marks the arrival of a new era where interactive, responsive cabin environments will significantly enhance the passenger experience. We are impressed by Valeo Lighting Systems' speed and professionalism globally. Their team skillfully applied OSP-RGBi technology and delivered an outstanding solution to their customer at record speed, completing a process that typically takes two years in less than a year."
Christophe Le Ligné, Vice President of R&D at Valeo, stated, “Interior lighting is an integral part of the in-vehicle experience. Dynamic applications open up a wide range of possibilities, from distinctive brand identity to highly personalized interior experiences. The system also provides visual information about vehicle status and performance. Furthermore, the system software can be updated throughout the vehicle's lifecycle to offer more animation effects (new features and personalization settings). In today's fast-paced global market, ams Osram demonstrates its expertise and flexibility in delivering high-quality products on time, ensuring customer satisfaction.”
