ams Osram, a global leader in smart sensing and light-emitting solutions, today announced the launch of its first Vegalas™ Power series high-power laser diode, solidifying its position as a one-stop technology provider for projection applications. From immersive home theaters to automotive head-up displays and industrial machine vision, projection applications are experiencing a widespread adoption boom. This new product from ams Osram completes a full-chain optoelectronic solution for projection applications, encompassing multi-color light sources, multi-power levels, and sensing elements. Beyond projection, this new laser diode can also be used in applications such as weed control and stage lighting.

LEDs are commonly used light sources in consumer electronics, automotive, and industrial projection applications. However, in today's commercially available high-power applications, over 30% of projection devices still rely on traditional light sources such as high-pressure gas discharge lamps. Laser light sources outperform traditional light sources, achieving higher resource utilization efficiency and sustainability: at the same power consumption, laser projection light output intensity is 50% higher than traditional light source models; lifespan exceeds 20,000 hours, ten times longer than traditional solutions. This ensures long-term stability of brightness and superior image quality, eliminating the need for frequent light source replacements. Furthermore, laser projection devices offer the advantage of low noise.
For many years, ams Osram has been a leader in LED projection light source technology. Building on this strength, the company is now officially launching the Vegalas™ Power PLPM7_455QA laser. This product integrates multiple lasers into a single module, achieving a high light power output of 42 W within a short pulse cycle, with a WPE of approximately 45%, ushering in a new era of high-efficiency laser light sources. With its three core technologies—LEDs, lasers, and sensors—the company has become a one-stop supplier covering transmitters and sensors for projection applications.
Osram offers multi-color LED light sources, with products available in surface mount technology (SMT) and metal substrate (MCB) packages for enhanced heat dissipation. Its sensing product line includes complete components such as direct time-of-flight (dToF) modules and photodetectors for distance measurement. The latest laser technology platform utilizes high-power gallium nitride (GaN) lasers in the visible spectrum, offering both single-chip and multi-chip packaging options.
With its comprehensive product portfolio, ams Osram supports the development of next-generation projection applications, including professional and home large-screen projectors. These next-generation cutting-edge projectors offer 65% to 75% lower cost per unit projection area compared to LCD or OLED displays, making them a viable replacement for traditional flat-panel displays. The company also offers specially certified LED models for automotive projection applications.
The Vegalas™ Power PLPM7_455QA laser is available today, with a series of new products to be launched in the coming months.
Osram currently holds over 2,000 valid patents worldwide in the field of laser diodes, maintaining its leading position in the industry.
