On October 16, according to Micro LED-info, Meta has begun collaborating with ams OSRAM to jointly develop Micro LED technology.

The report states that Meta's Reality Labs has established a Micro LED R&D team in Regensburg, Germany, near ams OSRAM's main Micro LED R&D and production center. Meta is currently actively recruiting engineers in this field, and several key Micro LED experts and business personnel from ams OSRAM have already joined Meta.
Although the news has not been officially confirmed, Meta has consistently invested in Micro LED technology. As early as 2020, Meta signed an agreement with Plessey, a UK-based Micro LED technology provider, to dedicate all of Plessey's Micro LED production capacity to Meta's product development.
Although there were rumors that Meta had abandoned the project, in early 2025, Plessey and Meta jointly announced the successful development of the world's brightest red Micro LED display, designed specifically for AR glasses.
The report points out that if Meta does indeed begin collaborating with ams OSRAM, this move will have a significant impact on Plessey. Furthermore, Meta may also be collaborating simultaneously with multiple Micro LED chip manufacturers.
It's worth noting that in September 2024, Meta announced its Orion AR headset project, which uses Micro LED display technology. Reportedly, the Micro LED technology used in this project was provided by the Chinese microdisplay technology company JBD. And this September, Meta's latest AI AR headset, "Ray-Ban Display," uses LCoS display technology.
According to forecasts, this change is expected to drive LCoS's share of the AR display market to 13% by 2026. In contrast, significant breakthroughs in performance and cost for monolithic full-color LEDoS (Micro LED) display technology are not expected until 2028.
