On December 17, South Korean media reported that LG Innotek, a subsidiary of the LG Group, announced on Tuesday that it has developed a high-performance in-vehicle camera module equipped with a 5-megapixel RGB-IR dual sensor.

This high-performance in-vehicle camera module can be installed in multiple locations, such as the rearview mirror or above the passenger seat. The module can monitor the occupants in real time, detect the driver's state (such as drowsiness or inattention), and check whether front or rear passengers are wearing seat belts, thus enabling in-vehicle environmental monitoring.
It is understood that the previously released in-vehicle camera functions were mainly limited to driver monitoring and passenger monitoring systems, while this new module can achieve multiple functions through a single camera.
In terms of resolution, LG Innotek's in-vehicle camera module boasts a 5-megapixel resolution, five times that of existing products. This module provides clearer images for more precise monitoring of driver and passenger behavior.
The camera module can also be used for entertainment purposes, such as video calls and virtual meetings, which will become increasingly important in the development of autonomous driving technology. Even in nighttime environments, the infrared detection function can accurately monitor the driving status, while the module's extended horizontal field of view ensures visibility of the second-row seats.
In terms of size, this high-performance in-vehicle camera module is 15% smaller than existing products, enabling automakers to optimize interior space and increase design flexibility.
Earlier this year, LG Innotek also launched a high-performance heated camera module and a high-performance LiDAR. The launch of this high-performance in-vehicle camera module will further expand LG Innotek's product line of vehicle sensing solutions.
LG Innotek CEO Moon Hyuk-soo stated, "Vehicle sensing solutions, including camera modules and LiDAR, are the core pillar of LG Innotek's autonomous driving parts business, and are developing in parallel with vehicle communication and lighting."
LG Innotek reportedly plans to showcase its latest innovations, including an RGB-IR in-vehicle camera module, at CES in Las Vegas in January 2025. (Translated by Irving)
