Just recently, the National Film Administration issued another notice to promote the standardized development of the LED cinema screen application market.
The National Film Administration has released 11 guidelines for the development of LED cinemas.
On June 23, the National Film Administration issued a notice on the development and standardization of LED (light-emitting diode) digital cinema theaters. Based on multiple architectural and digital cinema technical standards, the notice outlines 11 items for the film authorities of all provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities, relevant film organizations, the China Film Distribution and Exhibition Association, and the China Film Producers Association.
The National Film Administration stated that digital cinema LED (light-emitting diode) theaters represent a major revolution in film projection technology and are a crucial technological innovation for upgrading and improving the quality of China's film industry, achieving high-quality development, and promoting the goal of becoming a film powerhouse. This notice aims to promote the healthy development of LED theaters, standardize their construction, operation, and management, and ensure projection quality.
LED Cinema Screen Market Policy: From Stimulation to Standardized Development <br /> In recent years, the state has issued multiple documents to encourage the development of LED cinema screen applications. Furthermore, several provinces, including Guangdong, Jiangxi, Shandong, Shaanxi, and Jiangsu, have also introduced supporting policies, allocating provincial film special funds to support the development of LED cinemas, injecting strong momentum into the local film industry. Against this backdrop, the LED cinema screen market has entered a period of rapid development.
Especially in 2024, against the backdrop of policies such as the large-scale implementation of the cinema LED screen projection system upgrade plan issued by six departments including the National Development and Reform Commission, the number of newly installed LED cinema screens in China reached a record high of over 60 (incomplete statistics).
This year, with the expansion of the trade-in program and related policy support, LED cinema screens continue to be rapidly installed and deployed across various regions. According to preliminary statistics, as of June 25th, 33 new LED cinemas have opened this year.
As more and more LED cinemas open across the country, the government is also simultaneously standardizing the application and development of LED cinema screens to ensure the technical quality of LED cinema screens, protect the interests of cinemas and consumers, and maintain a healthy market development ecosystem.
For example, in 2023, the National Film Administration officially released my country's first industry standard for digital cinema LED theaters, "Technical Requirements and Measurement Methods for Digital Cinema LED Theaters," numbered DY/T8—2023. The standard specifies the terminology and definitions, abbreviations, composition, and technical requirements for digital cinema LED theaters, filling a gap in domestic industry standards.
The release of this notification from the National Film Administration may allow the application of LED cinema screens to develop further in a healthier manner.
In addition to highlighting the standardized procedures for the supply and quality of LED cinema screens, the notice also mentioned that various organizations should provide corresponding support for the application and development of LED cinema screens, such as the establishment and training of relevant professional testing institutions; encouraging film and television production companies to provide more relevant 2K and 4K versions of content; and encouraging industry, academia, and research to accelerate the innovation of LED cinema projection technology and promote cost reduction, quality improvement, and efficiency enhancement of products.
With the release of this notice, domestically produced LED cinema screens are expected to enter an era of higher-quality development, stimulating further expansion of the LED cinema screen application market.
