In late September, Credo Technology Group Holding Ltd., a provider of high-speed, secure connectivity solutions, announced that it had completed the acquisition of Hyperlume, Inc., a provider of Micro LED optical interconnect technology.

Hyperlume focuses on developing Micro LED-based optical interconnect technology for chip-to-chip communication. Its unique technology uses dedicated ultra-high-speed Micro LEDs and ultra-low-power circuit designs to effectively overcome the bottlenecks of traditional electronic interconnects in terms of energy consumption and bandwidth. It is claimed that its pluggable active optical cable solution supports a bandwidth of 1.6Tbps, expandable to 3.2Tbps, with a fixed latency of 4ns and optical flight time, and a transmission energy consumption of only 1pJ/bit, while supporting a distance of up to 30 meters.

It is understood that with the surge in demand for massive datasets and parallel processing in AI, cloud computing, and hyperscale data centers, the pressure on network bandwidth is profoundly changing data transmission methods. Micro LED technology, with its high speed, high energy efficiency, and low latency, is becoming a key technology for next-generation data center optical interconnects and is increasingly anticipated for providing the necessary data transmission capabilities for building hyperscale AI clusters.

Against this backdrop, Micro LED optical interconnect technology companies, including Hyperlume, are attracting increasing market attention and achieving impressive funding results. For example, Hyperlume completed a $12.5 million seed round of financing earlier this year, with investors including Intel Capital, demonstrating that its technological strength and development potential are recognized by the industry and capital markets.

Currently, 400Gbps and 600Gbps solutions have been widely adopted. According to research, by 2025, global shipments of optical transceiver modules with speeds of 400Gbps and above will exceed 31.9 million units, representing an annual growth rate of 56.5%. In the future, as higher bandwidth solutions are gradually implemented, the demand for Micro LED is expected to increase significantly, at which time companies like Hyperlume are expected to benefit.

Now, Credo has acquired Hyperlume, whose Micro LED optical interconnect technology products will be combined with Credo's end-to-end system-level connectivity solutions, helping Credo accelerate its high-speed connectivity technology landscape for the future of AI data infrastructure. With the merger of these two product matrices, Credo's customers will also have access to new AI network expansion solutions. This also means that Credo has timely seized the business opportunities in the emerging Micro LED optical communication market, and is expected to further expand the company's business scale and diversify its profit growth points in the future.
