Amazon announced on the 23rd that it is developing AI-powered smart glasses for its delivery drivers to improve delivery efficiency. The glasses are designed to provide a hands-free experience, eliminating the need for drivers to constantly switch their gaze between their phones, packages, and their surroundings.

These smart glasses will enable delivery drivers to scan packages, follow step-by-step instructions, and capture delivery confirmations without using their phones. Amazon says the glasses are equipped with AI sensing technology and computer vision, allowing them to display hazard information and delivery assignments.

Amazon hopes this new product will reduce delivery times by providing detailed directions and hazard information directly in the driver's line of sight. The glasses automatically activate when the driver stops at the delivery location, helping them locate packages in their vehicle and navigate to the delivery address. The glasses offer easy-to-follow directions in complex environments such as apartments and commercial locations.

In addition, the glasses come with a controller worn on the delivery vest, which includes operating controls, a replaceable battery, and a dedicated emergency button. Amazon also notes that the glasses are compatible with prescription lenses and auto-dimming transition lenses.

Amazon is currently testing the glasses in North America and plans to roll them out more widely after further refining the technology. According to a Reuters report last year, Amazon had already been developing these smart glasses for some time.

Amazon says the glasses will offer "instant defect detection," issuing warnings if a driver accidentally delivers a package to the wrong address. They will also detect pets in the yard and automatically adjust to dangerous situations such as low light. These safety features will help improve the safety of delivery drivers.

Amazon is also expanding its virtual reality training program, which is expected to have 95 sites by the end of 2026, further improving the safety and efficiency of delivery drivers.
