On July 20, South Korean media outlet ETnews reported that Samsung Display will supply 48-inch Pillar-to-Pillar (P2P) OLED displays for Mercedes-Benz's Maybach S-Class sedan. These displays will be featured in the new Maybach model slated for release in 2028, with Mercedes-Benz as the exclusive supplier.

According to reports, the unique feature of the P2P display screen compared to ordinary car displays is that it spans the left and right pillars of the car, and can completely cover the entire area in front of the driver and front passenger.

It is worth noting that, due to the overall length of the car dashboard and its curved design on both sides, traditional LCD screens and rigid OLED screens are difficult to meet this form requirement. Flexible OLED, with its bendable characteristics, has become a key technology to realize P2P screens.

The report points out that Mercedes-Benz began exploring the application of P2P displays as early as two years ago. In the era of electric vehicles, this design aims to allow users to more conveniently access digital dashboard information, navigation guidance, and control the air conditioning system, while also meeting the interactive needs of entertainment functions such as music, video, and games. Regarding the research and development and supply of this screen, Mercedes-Benz communicated with several global display technology companies, ultimately choosing Samsung Display because of its leading position in flexible OLED technologies such as foldable and stretchable displays.

This marks Samsung Display's first collaboration with Mercedes-Benz. Previously, the automotive brand had partnered with LG Display in the automotive display sector. The report states that securing this Mercedes-Benz order is not only a significant step for Samsung Display in entering the automotive market and expanding its electronic components business, but also has the potential to drive the shift from LCD-dominated automotive displays to OLED. With the continued penetration of OLED technology in mainstream models, the adoption of OLED in automotive displays is expected to accelerate further. (Translated by TrendForce Display)
